How To Use Empathy As Your Success Secret Weapon

Back in the old days, someone who cured the plague was called a plague doctor, the bloke who went and killed things for food was a hunter, and the person who made candlesticks was called the candlestick-maker.

A simpler time.

In 2019, things have become much more granular. We have a whole raft of titles for people who would have just been one man in a shop a couple of centuries ago.

  • User Experience Designer
  • Visual Interface Designer
  • Growth Hacker
  • Product Director

Titles like these would have fallen under one name back in the age of literal title:

Agent of Empathy

Running a business in the 21st century is all about building trust and relationships that you can turn into revenue over and over again. This foundation needs to be built on understanding, and all understanding is founded in empathy. By finding the best way to show your understanding, you’ll discover the routes that common sense dictates people are likely to take. You find the spark that catches attention and guides people through that doorway to becoming a better person that you’re the bouncer, promoter and creator of, as a result of your product or work.

It’s important to remember that on your mission to empathise with, and solve, a problem, you’ll get a wave of people giving you feedback. Only some of this feedback is important, and it’s vital you always relate changes in direction to overwhelming demand. You can’t please everyone, and trying to will stress you out in the long run. So focus on the people you can impact, stay on top of their problems and always be empathising and thinking on how you can help.

To honestly use empathy as the special sauce that grants you success, you’ve got to put yourself in the shoes of the person you’re hoping to help, rather than your ego, and understand the problems of another. From there, you can build up trust by showing your solutions and that you “get it”.

In all, make people give a damn by showing you give a damn; do this time and time again to build the trust that will be the foundation of your success.
